Steven Townsend

Steven Townsend
is the founder and co-owner of Code 3 Images. Steve was a freelance
photographer in April 2001 when he worked at the scene of a structure fire as a
volunteer with the American Red Cross. Between volunteer duties, he photographed
the fully involved pallet recycling plant as it burned to the ground.
Steve’s freelance work gradually
became focused on emergency services.
Code3images.com was established, as the Mission Statement indicates, to
increase public awareness of the critical services provided by regional
emergency personnel, using photography to promote training events and provide
photojournalistic coverage of responses to area emergency incidents. Thanks to
the internet, this mission is being carried out on an international level. The
site welcomes visitors from approximately twenty-four countries each month.
In addition to appearing at code3images.com, Steve’s photographs are published
in classroom training materials by the National Fire Academy for the U.S. Fire
Administration. Alert-All, a fire safety education company, published one of his
pictures as a fire prevention poster. Steve's photos are featured in textbooks
such as Fundamentals
of Firefighter Skills and Fire Officer Principles and Practice by the National Fire
Protection Association and
Intermediate Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured by
the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. These books are published by
Jones & Bartlett Publishers. The January-February
2004 edition of Industrial Fire World Magazine included Steve's
photos of the August 4, 2003 fire at the Jim Beam warehouse in Bardstown.
Steve’s pictures are used
by universities throughout the United States in programs that prepare nursing
and EMT students for some of the emergencies they will face on the job. The
Louisville Medical Center’s trauma teams have used specific MVA photos for
educational purposes in order to compare patients’ injuries to the vehicles in
which they were trapped.
Locally, Steve’s work appears in instructional materials, slide shows, and
PowerPoint presentations that are used by State Fire/Rescue Training Area 5
instructors. Local arson investigators and the Kentucky State
Fire Marshall's office have used his photos on various occasions for incident
reviews.
Steve is
a freelance photographer for the Hardin County Independent and works with
local businesses to provide photographs for brochures, catalogues, and
presentations.
Steve
is also a volunteer firefighter, the Public Affairs Officer of the Hardin County
Fire Chief's Association, and is a volunteer with
the National Weather Service Skywarn Severe Storm Spotter program.
